Super-foods. Can they really cause us to live healthier, longer lives?
Updated: Apr 3, 2020
There is quite a bit of scientific research and first-hand knowledge from people that are living well into their 90's that there is a direct correlation between what we eat, how it affects our bodies. But before we dive into whether or not superfoods can lengthen our lives, let's discuss what superfoods are. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, "A food (such as salmon, broccoli, or blueberries) that are rich in compounds (like antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) are considered beneficial to a person's health." Nutritional experts cannot give a clear "definition" of superfood. Superfoods are known to strengthen your immune system and boost your defenses against colds, flu, and other diseases. It is our immune system that is in control of protecting us against sickness and disease, but our immune system cannot fight on its own. It requires assistance from us. Immune cells hide in places (such as our lymph nodes); when they are healthy, they stand and fight off "invaders". When toxins or bacteria attempt to take you down-sometimes causing those lymph nodes to swell-this is a sign that a battle is happening between our cells and viruses. That is where we (with our antioxidants) come in to help. When we feed our bodies superfoods that contain antioxidants (our immune systems superhero) we are providing our cells with the strength it needs to ward off illness. Without antioxidants, our immune system can't do what it needs to do.
Many of B&V's superfood products have been proven to aid in protecting the body from the combat of chronic states of illness. When used regularly, many of our products exert beneficial effects on human health and especially on the immune system. For example, EVOO offers long term benefits. Because of its high phenolic content, it has been shown to produce immediate effects. Our B&V teas are packed with antioxidants, large amounts of vitamins, phenolic acids, flavanols, anthocyanins, and so many more ingredients. They too offer benefits known to support a healthy immune system and aid in the prevention and ease of cold and flu symptoms, hay fever, sinus infections, and a multitude of other ailments and diseases. Spices and seasonings have been consumed in some cultures because of their medicinal benefits and their ability to add amazing flavor to your food. Turmeric is a golden spice that eases inflammation, slows cancer and treats depression. Ginger has been used for thousands of years to help treat numerous ailments (cancer, osteoarthritis pain, nausea, migraines, high blood pressure and much more. Branch & Vine carries all of these products and more. I think we are safe to assume that superfoods, when made a central part of one's diet, can in fact cause us to live healthier, longer lives and offer a wide range of long-term benefits.
